Appearance:

  • Possess slender, flattened bodies with distinctive forceps-like cerci (pincer-like appendages)
    at the end of their abdomen
  • Measure 5 to 25 millimeters in length depending on species
  • Typically brown or black in coloration

Habitat:

  • Found in gardens, fields, forests, and urban areas
  • Prefer dark and damp places, such as under rocks, logs, mulch, and debris

Diet:

  • Are omnivores consuming decaying plant matter, insects, and small invertebrates
  • Some species also eat fungi and algae
